Memory is a space. Theorised by Marc Auge in his book, The Non-Place, each memory is a journey back in time to these sensations, spaces, and feelings from the past. It is a non-place in which we psychologically travel to these spaces in time.
Fragments is a physical interpretation of this phenomenon. The images are taken from the walls of the main rooms of my childhood home, and formed into a new space of their own. Overlays of different textures found in each room were applied to the “walls” and laser-cut to open windows into the memories of these spaces. The pieces cut represent the sensations and textures that trigger these memories within our minds, transporting us to these spaces.
